According to the latest figures by Internet Live Stats, there are now over one billion registered websites, and it isn’t about to stop growing, with a new website being registered every single second.
With the World Wide Web having turned 25 this year, many see the reason behind the Internet reaching one billion websites is due to amount of address options now available that go beyond ‘.com’ and ‘.net’.
New domains include ‘.london’, ‘.restaurant’ and ‘.shop’.
In 2013 alone, the web grew by more than a third with 630 million websites being registered at the beginning of the year and over 850 million by December 2013.
This being said 75 per cent of these websites are not currently active, but have simply been registered, also known as ‘domain parked.’
