Until recently, virtual reality had been something you might have seen in films or read about in sci-fi books. This is, however, not the case anymore.

Since the release of Oculus Rift in 2015, virtual reality has started to dominate our lives, with the demand for headsets and 360-degree games, videos and virtual worlds on the rise.

With HTC, Samsung and Sony releasing their own smartphone-powered headsets and the rise of VR games and apps, Facebook and YouTube supporting 360 degree videos, and film makers exploring the potential of virtual reality documentaries and animations, it is clear that virtual reality is here to stay and Microsoft are looking to compete too.virtual-reality-1389030_1920

As part of the Creators update, expected sometime next year, Microsoft is planning to support virtual reality experiences on all Windows 10 PCs. The software giant revealed that their own VR headsets will start from $299 (£240) and they have begun to release details of PC specifications required to power VR experiences.

The specifications are as follows:

  • Windows 10 PC
  • 4GB of Ram
  • USB 3.0 port
  • A graphics card with DirectX 12 support
  • 4 CPU cores, including dual-core processors

While it seems that virtual reality is making an impact in our everyday lives, can the same be said for the business world?

The answer is in fact, yes…or at least, it is starting to. It is being reported by the Virtual Reality Society that businesses have begun to embrace virtual reality as a cost effective way to develop a product or service. For example, companies have been using VR as a means to test prototypes without developing different versions – something that can be time consuming and expensive to do.

Virtual reality is also being used to offer virtual tours of a business environment, training new employees, for giving customers a 360 view of a products, and it has even been used to hold meetings with people in different locations across the world.
