For the first time, a new census has been published that reveals the actual size of the UK’s digital technology industry. And, according to The Data City’s findings, the industry is actually over 25% larger than previously thought.
How was the data collected?
This Data as a Service (DaaS) company used a combination of open data, the internet and artificial intelligence to collect its robust and real-time data. For the first time, this technology was able to map emerging UK sectors including AI and IoT.
With this new ability to measure emerging sectors, it meant that the true number of digital technologies could be found.
Traditional classifications known as Standard Industry Classification (SIC codes) were used by Companies House to find that 259,412 companies are classified as digital technology. However, with these new RTIC (Real Time Industrial Classification) codes, that number rises to 349,865.
How many companies were analysed?
Data City’s findings provided insight into over 4.06 million active companies in the UK, monitoring their websites and digital footprints to recognise their activity. The data was organised into 29 cities and an interactive online map was produced to create a clearer picture of the landscape around this industry.
The census evaluated eight main sectors within the industry:
- Artificial intelligence and data
- Internet of Things
And the top ten cities for digital technology are:
- Milton Keynes
